▾Why it's ranked here

Alexa integration and simple installation are what reviewers keep praising about the Amazon Smart Thermostat, with PCMag noting you can configure it to work with Alexa 'hunches that will change the set point when Alexa thinks you're away or asleep.' CNET calls it 'great features at an unbeatable price.' Users have reported occasional connectivity issues, and compatibility outside the Alexa ecosystem is limited, which matters in a mixed smart home setup. Amazon-ecosystem households looking for a reliable, budget-friendly smart heating solution are the fit.

Strengths
  • — Works seamlessly with Alexa and other Amazon smart home devices
  • — Easy installation process with clear step-by-step instructions
Watch-outs
  • — Limited compatibility with non-Alexa smart home ecosystems

Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential
#3
Best for: tech-savvy homeowners seeking occupancy detection
Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential

▾Why it's ranked here

Alexa and Google Assistant both work with the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential, and its detailed energy reports help trim heating and cooling costs. PCMag's John R. Delaney praised the easy installation and clean touchscreen interface, while Tom's Guide questioned whether the higher price is justified for budget-conscious buyers. As the stripped-down model in ecobee's lineup, it ships without a SmartSensor, so room-by-room occupancy sensing requires buying one separately. Tech-savvy homeowners chasing energy efficiency and smart-home automation are the fit; tight budgets should consider alternatives.

Strengths
  • — Works well with Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control
  • — Provides detailed energy usage reports and insights
Watch-outs
  • — Occupancy/room sensing requires separately sold SmartSensors
