WORX 13 Amp Electric Leaf Mulcher

The verdict

The WORX WG430 is a stand-alone, corded 13-amp leaf mulcher that uses trimmer line rather than blades, with a rated 11:1 reduction ratio and a capacity of up to 53 gallons of leaves per minute. Bob Vila named it best overall after testing 15 models, finding it shreds much faster than any blower/vacuum type, and The Spruce also made it its top pick after shredding New England fall leaves with it. Both found it easy to set up and store, while The Spruce noted wet leaves and twigs are its weak points. It suits owners who already rake leaves into piles and want to cut a large volume down quickly; anyone who wants to vacuum leaves off the lawn or shred sticks should look at a handheld or walk-behind model.

Fills a 30-gallon bag in under five minutes

Bob Vila fed the WG430 by the armload and found each load gone before the next could be picked up, filling a 30-gallon trash bag with shredded leaves in less than five minutes. It judged the WG430 much faster than any blower/vacuum-type mulcher in its test. The Spruce described a similar pace, with one load shredded in about the time it takes to add another. Results depend on the leaves: The Spruce saw anything from a 3:1 reduction to nearly the advertised 11:1, with dry leaves handled best and wet ones taking longer and coming out coarser. Twigs either passed through unshredded or occasionally shot back out of the hopper, so it is a leaves-only machine.

Simple setup, easy storage and a bladeless head

The WG430 needs only minor assembly, and Bob Vila's tester found it easy to assemble, operate and pack up between seasons, with no fuel, oil or battery to manage. The Spruce adds that the parts nest together for storage and that the 20-pound unit is lightweight. Instead of metal blades, the cutting head spins string-trimmer line, which The Spruce felt was safer than bladed models and found about as quiet as an electric weed whacker. Bob Vila shredded five bags of leaves and other fine debris before the line needed replacing, a job that took under two minutes. It runs from a heavy-duty 12- to 14-gauge extension cord.

A single-job tool that needs raked leaves

The trade-off is that the WG430 only shreds. Bob Vila lists it as a single-task tool that spends most of the year in storage, and leaves must be gathered and lifted into the hopper, so it adds to raking or blowing rather than replacing them. The Spruce found it unsteady in gusty weather and noted that paper bags tend to slide down and make a mess, while plastic yard bags stay put. It also advises wearing a face mask and eye protection, because shredding dry leaves is dusty and twigs can fly back. For yards with heavy leaf fall that already rake into piles, both reviews rate it highly for speed and ease of use.

Strengths

  • +Shreds up to 53 gallons of leaves a minute; Bob Vila filled a 30-gallon bag in under 5 minutes
  • +Easy to assemble, operate and pack away for off-season storage
  • +Drops mulch straight into a bag; plastic yard bags attach easily and stay put
  • +Trimmer-line cutting head lasted five bags of leaves and took under 2 minutes to replace

Watch-outs

  • −Made for leaves only: twigs pass through unshredded or shoot back out
  • −Wet leaves shred slower and coarser, down to about 3:1 in The Spruce's testing
  • −Leaves must be gathered and lifted into the hopper by hand

How it compares

The WG430 is a stand-alone, hopper-fed shredder, whereas the WORX Trivac WG512 and ECHO Shred-n-Vac are handheld units that blow and vacuum leaves off the ground; Bob Vila found the WG430 shreds faster than any blower/vacuum type it tested. Unlike the gas-powered ECHO and the battery-powered Ryobi 40V, it is corded and needs an extension cord, and at 20 lb it is set down in one spot rather than carried around the yard.
