The verdict

The VIVO K Series is a manual, pneumatic-spring converter on an X-shaped frame that lifts straight up rather than swinging forward. Business Insider tested the 32-inch model and named it the best overall converter for its stability, small footprint and value; TechRadar gave it four stars and was impressed by its stability and smooth adjustment. It has no motor, no cable management and a shallow keyboard tray, and it takes about 15 minutes of assembly.

Full review

Business Insider: best overall

Business Insider tested 10 standing desk converters and picked the VIVO K Series as the best. Its tester used the 32-inch model with a laptop and an extra monitor and liked that the X-shaped frame, like an ironing board, moves only vertically, so the unit fits a slim desk. The pneumatic lift adjusted smoothly with minimal force, and the rounded edges and curved keyboard level were comfortable.

The one downside Business Insider found was assembly: about 15 minutes including hunting for a screwdriver, with directions that were not very clear but a process that was intuitive.

TechRadar: four stars for a budget pick

TechRadar rated the VIVO 32-inch converter four stars and called it a great choice for anyone who wants a standing desk converter without breaking the bank. Its reviewers were impressed by the stability, including at maximum height, and by the smooth height adjustment, and judged the materials likely to last for years.

TechRadar's reasons to avoid it are a shallow keyboard tray, no built-in cable management and a size that may be too large for an average cubicle. It is also manual: there is no electric motor, only pneumatic spring assistance.

Sizes and capacity

The K Series comes in six widths from 26 to 48 inches and several colors. The tested 32-inch model carries up to 33 pounds and, per TechRadar's specifications, adjusts from 4.4 to 19.6 inches above the desk.

Strengths

  • +Very stable for the price, per Business Insider and TechRadar
  • +X-frame lifts straight up and down, suiting small workspaces, per Business Insider
  • +Smooth pneumatic adjustment with unlimited height positions, per TechRadar
  • +Removable keyboard tray and many sizes and colors

Watch-outs

  • −Manual only, no electric motor
  • −Shallow keyboard tray and no built-in cable management, per TechRadar
  • −About 15 minutes of assembly with unclear directions, per Business Insider

How it compares

It lifts with a pneumatic spring where the Uplift E7 Electric Standing Desk Converter uses a motor, and its 33 lb limit is far below the E7's 110 lbs. Business Insider notes its X-frame moves straight up and down, so it needs no clearance in front for a forward swing.

VariDesk Pro Plus 36
#1 · Top Pick

VariDesk Pro Plus 36

The VariDesk Pro Plus 36 needs no assembly and carries a 5-year warranty, the same length as the frame warranty on the FlexiSpot AlcoveRiser Standing Desk Converter M7, which costs less and is rated rock solid at all heights. Poor stability when standing is a listed drawback of the VariDesk. Its 35 lbs capacity is far below the 110 lbs of the Uplift E7 Electric Standing Desk Converter.

FlexiSpot AlcoveRiser Standing Desk Converter M7
#2

FlexiSpot AlcoveRiser Standing Desk Converter M7

The FlexiSpot AlcoveRiser Standing Desk Converter M7 is rated rock solid at all heights, where poor stability when standing is a listed drawback of the VariDesk Pro Plus 36. It costs less than the Ergotron WorkFit-TX Standing Desk Converter, but its keyboard tray does not tilt and the Ergotron's does. Its 33 lbs weight capacity is below the Ergotron's 40 lbs.

Ergotron WorkFit-TX Standing Desk Converter
#3

Ergotron WorkFit-TX Standing Desk Converter

The Ergotron WorkFit-TX Standing Desk Converter has a 32 x 27 inch work surface and a keyboard tray that descends and tilts, where the FlexiSpot AlcoveRiser Standing Desk Converter M7 has no tilting tray. It costs more than the FlexiSpot, and its 40 lbs weight capacity is well below the 110 lbs of the Uplift E7 Electric Standing Desk Converter. It also limits you to compatible Ergotron monitor arms.

Uplift E7 Electric Standing Desk Converter
#5

Uplift E7 Electric Standing Desk Converter

The Uplift E7 Electric Standing Desk Converter carries up to 110 lbs, against 40 lbs for the Ergotron WorkFit-TX Standing Desk Converter and 35 lbs for the VariDesk Pro Plus 36. It adjusts electrically with presets where the VariDesk uses a spring-assisted lift, and it is difficult to set up alone while the VariDesk needs no assembly. It has no Bluetooth, and each monitor is limited to 17.6 lbs.
