With the largest blades of any twin in this round-up, the Genesis A1WINDOWFAN is the best value for buyers who care about raw airflow over creature comforts. Copper motors and a real thermostat lift it above bargain-bin twins. The plastic chassis and the noise on high are what keep it from beating the Bionaire premium pick.

Strengths
  • — Adjustable thermostat with LED indicator lights lets you set a target temperature without a separate display
  • — Each blade can run as intake, exhaust, or be set to different speeds for directional cross-ventilation
  • — Recorded a strong 668.5 CFM in TechGearLab lab testing while listing well under $50 at most retailers
Watch-outs
  • — Direction switching is manual on the back panel - not as convenient as the Bionaire's electric reverse

Ranked #4 in Best Window Fans

The Vornado Transom swaps the usual twin blades for one long fan in a low, 8-inch-tall case that fits windows 26 to 40 inches wide. Wirecutter calls it the best window fan it has tested, measuring about 10 to 11 mph of air speed at about half the power draw of other models; TechGearLab found it the quietest fan in its test but measured relatively poor air movement in CFM. Both outlets note it is hard to clean.

Strengths
  • — Quietest fan in TechGearLab's noise test at 48.4 dBA; Wirecutter measured about 49 decibels on high
  • — Low-profile case fits windows up to 40 inches wide, with foam pads to improve the seal, per Wirecutter
  • — Remote control, and the fan closes when off to stop air exchange, per TechGearLab
Watch-outs
  • — TechGearLab's CFM readings showed relatively poor air movement

How they stack up

Genesis A1WINDOWFAN Twin 9-inch High-Velocity Window Fan

The Genesis A1WINDOWFAN has larger 9-inch blades than the Bionaire BWF0910AR (8.5 in) but is louder at peak, 55.1 dBA against 50.1 dBA. It matches the 9-inch blades of the Comfort Zone CZ319WT and has a thermostat, which the Comfort Zone lacks. Its direction switching is manual, where the Bionaire and the Holmes HAWF2043 reverse electrically, and its 668.5 CFM airflow sits between the Bionaire's 754.5 and the Holmes's 592.1.

Vornado Transom Window Fan

It uses a single long fan instead of the twin blades of the Bionaire BWF0910AR, Genesis A1WINDOWFAN, Comfort Zone CZ319WT and Holmes HAWF2043. Wirecutter measured nearly twice the air speed of the Genesis and Holmes fans it tested, while TechGearLab's CFM readings put its air movement below the other window fans it tested.
