Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM OSS (E mount)

1.4:1 native, 2.8:1 with a teleconverter

Announced in late 2025, the FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM OSS replaced the decade-old FE 90mm as Sony's macro flagship. Digital Camera World gave it five stars, writing that 'high-end handling and spectacular performance make this Sony's best-ever macro.' Dustin Abbott, who reviews lenses in volume, concluded that 'I can say with confidence that the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS is the best of them all.'

The headline capability is magnification. It focuses to 1.4:1 natively, past traditional life size, and takes Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters to reach 2.8:1. The-Digital-Picture was positive about the optics, rating the lens's resolution highly against the older 90mm macro.

Sharp wide open, and sharp behind a teleconverter

Abbott described an 'exceptionally sharp lens' whose MTF chart shows 'near-perfect performance over the middle half of the frame,' and noted it holds that sharpness wide open and with a 2x teleconverter mounted. That is unusual, because extreme magnification is exactly where softness normally shows. Colour and aberration control sit at G Master reference level, so files need little correction.

Stabilisation matters more at macro distance than almost anywhere else, since shake is magnified along with the subject. Abbott landed a handheld frame of a hornet 'at 1/30th of a second even with the 1.4x teleconverter attached,' which is the practical argument for OSS over the unstabilised Tamron and Sigma alternatives.

Quad XD motors and a body full of controls

Abbott called it 'a serious optical instrument' that is 'loaded with important controls to help you get the shots you want' — aperture ring, focus hold buttons, a focus limiter. Despite gaining focal length, magnification and controls over the FE 90mm it replaces, it is only about 42g heavier, so it stays manageable on a mirrorless body. Four XD linear motors drive an autofocus system Sony rates as up to 1.9x faster than the 90mm and quick enough to keep pace with the a9 III's 120fps burst, which matters because this doubles as a portrait and short telephoto lens.

Roughly $1,499 against $879 and $700

Price is the clear downside, and Abbott names it directly: 'much more expensive than alternatives,' at roughly $1,499 against the Sigma at around $879 and the Tamron at $700. Both of those third-party lenses deliver excellent 1:1 results, and for a photographer who shoots macro occasionally the gap is very hard to justify. The GM answers with 1.4:1, teleconverter support, in-lens stabilisation and G Master build, none of which the cheaper lenses offer — but it is overkill for casual close-up work, and it is E-mount only.

Where it sits across systems

On E-mount the GM sits at the top, above the still-sold FE 90mm G OSS and well above the Tamron 90mm and Sigma 105mm. Across systems it is the direct counterpart to the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro — same 1.4:1 reach, same stabilisation, same five-star reception — so choosing between them is really choosing a camera body. Against the Nikon Z MC 105mm it pulls ahead on maximum magnification and on teleconverter support.
