Six zones, plus a master valve and rain sensor
The ARC6 is a six-zone indoor timer with Wi-Fi built into the unit rather than added by a separate module. The terminal block takes the six station wires plus a master valve or pump start relay and a rain or rain-freeze sensor, which covers most residential systems without an expander. The case is plastic, roughly six and a half inches square and under two inches deep, so it fits on a garage or utility-room wall without taking over.
Weather-based scheduling Rain Bird says saves 30 percent
Scheduling is the selling point. The controller pulls the local forecast and historical averages for your postal code and shortens, skips or restores watering against them, and Rain Bird claims up to 30 percent less water as a result. That is a manufacturer figure rather than an independently measured one. What is verifiable is the behaviour: adjustments can be applied to one program or to all of them at once, and a rain delay can be set for up to 14 days without a physical sensor attached.
Three programs, four start times each
Programming is conventional and that is a virtue. Three independent programs, labelled A, B and C, each take four start times, twelve in total, and the dial and display handle all of it without a phone in the loop. The Rain Bird 2.0 app adds the remote half, including schedule changes from anywhere, notifications, a schedule backup and temporary access you can hand to a landscaper and revoke afterwards. Alexa and Google Assistant are both supported.
Indoor only, and it needs a 120V outlet
The limits are physical. As YouTube reviewer Calderon Bridger points out, this is the indoor model, with no weather-rated enclosure, so it has to live somewhere dry, and it needs a 120V outlet rather than running off the low-voltage side of the system. Six zones is a hard ceiling. The scheduling logic also depends on a cloud weather feed, so a property in a microclimate, whether a coastal pocket or a valley the nearest station does not represent, will need manual overrides often enough to blunt the point of buying it.
$84 with the Wi-Fi already in the box
At $84 this is the cheap end of smart irrigation, and the value case is simple: built-in Wi-Fi, six zones and weather-based scheduling for less than many controllers cost before the wireless module is added. Anyone with more than six zones, or an outdoor installation, needs a different controller.
