The verdict

The ProForm Carbon TLX pairs a 3.0 CHP motor, a 20 in by 60 in deck, a 12 mph top speed and a 0-12% incline with a plain 7 in display instead of a touchscreen. Garage Gym Reviews rated it 4.2/5 after walking and running on it and gave it 5/5 for value; Treadmill Review Guru tested it for seven months. BarBend's testers split on it: one found it sturdy at top speed, another felt it shake and found the cushioning firm. iFIT classes run from your own phone or tablet, and the parts warranty is one year.

A running-size motor and deck without a screen

Garage Gym Reviews had a certified personal trainer use the Carbon TLX for walks, jogs and sprints, in manual mode and paired with the iFIT app. Her three stand-out specs were the 3.0 CHP motor, the 60-inch running deck and iFIT connectivity, which she said are not often seen at this price. The site rated the treadmill 4.2/5 overall.

Treadmill Review Guru, whose review reflects seven months of use, described the motor, deck size and construction as its best aspects.

Testers disagreed about stability and cushioning

BarBend put four testers on the Carbon TLX and published their category scores without an overall rating. A tester of about 140 pounds scored durability 4.5 out of 5 after sprinting at top speed and incline and reported no shake or wobble. A collegiate strength coach scored durability 2 out of 5, said the treadmill was shaking when he ran, and thought anyone over 250 pounds might find the belt unstable at higher speeds.

BarBend's testers also found the running surface uncomfortable for longer jogs and sprints. Garage Gym Reviews said the cushioning is not the best it has seen and gave adjustability and ergonomics 3.5 out of 5, its lowest category score.

iFIT runs from your own device

There is no touchscreen. The console is a 7-inch display showing time, distance, speed, pace, incline, calories and heart rate, with numbered quick-select buttons for speed and incline. Treadmill Review Guru reports that iFIT is streamed from the phone app, that the treadmill still adjusts speed and incline automatically to follow the trainer, and that the membership costs $39 per month after a 30-day trial.

The same review lists the catches: the treadmill has to be unlocked through the iFIT app the first time it is used even by owners who do not subscribe, there are no onboard workouts outside manual mode, and iFIT audio plays through the phone rather than the treadmill speakers unless an audio cable is plugged in.

Folding, setup and warranty

The deck folds with a lift assist and lowers on its own once released by a foot bar. BarBend measured 67.3 pounds on the hands when the folded treadmill is tipped onto its transport wheels, and one of its testers called it the easiest treadmill to put together. Garage Gym Reviews gave delivery and setup 5 out of 5.

Garage Gym Reviews lists the one-year parts warranty as a con; the frame is covered for 10 years. The in-box weight is 249 pounds and the user weight limit is 300 pounds.

How it compares

Matches the 3.0 CHP motor, 12 mph top speed and 20 in by 60 in deck of the Sole F63 and Bowflex T6, but its incline stops at 12% where theirs reach 15%, its weight capacity is 300 lb against their 325 lb, and its 10-year frame and 1-year parts warranty is shorter than their lifetime frame and motor coverage. A stronger motor and a longer deck than the Horizon T101's 2.5 CHP and 20 in by 55 in.
