Presto 03510 FlipSide Belgian Waffle Maker

The verdict

The Presto 03510 FlipSide is the best budget Belgian flip maker and America's Test Kitchen's Best Buy. Its professional-style 180° flip and ceramic nonstick grid produce thick, well-browned waffles "almost an inch and a half high," and it stores slim on its side for around $65. It handles only one waffle at a time and can drip condensation when flipped. For cheap, genuine Belgian waffles it is a proven value.

A 180-degree flip across a 7-inch Belgian grid

The FlipSide's whole mechanism is the rotary flip: close it, turn the unit 180 degrees, and the batter spreads across the full 7-inch grid so both faces bake evenly. America's Test Kitchen named it their Best Buy and found it made well-browned waffles almost an inch and a half high, which is genuine Belgian loft rather than the thin grids most cheap irons manage. Reviewed.com agreed that it turns out crispy, evenly browned waffles.

One waffle at a time, on a timer dial

There is one grid, so a family breakfast comes out in sequence rather than all at once, and the two-at-a-time flip machines are simply faster for a crowd. Browning is governed by a rotating timer dial rather than a heat-level setting, which means learning the machine by feel instead of dialling in a number. America's Test Kitchen also flagged that it can drip hot condensation as you flip it, so keep a towel under the hinge.

A ceramic grid that wipes clean and stands on its side

The grid is ceramic nonstick, which releases waffles cleanly and wipes down rather than needing a scrub, and it sidesteps the coating-wear worries that come with older nonstick finishes. Cool-touch handles make the flip safe to do one-handed. The unit is 11.25 by 11.75 by 4 inches and designed to stand upright on its side, so it stores in far less cabinet space than a flip machine of this size has any right to need.

Around $65, with a one-year warranty

At roughly $65 the FlipSide costs a fraction of what the premium flip irons do and produces a comparable waffle, which is the entire argument for it. What you give up is capacity, precise browning control and warranty length, since Presto covers it for one year. For a household that wants thick Belgian waffles now and then, in a kitchen with no cabinet space to spare, that is a straightforward trade.

How it compares

The budget Belgian flip pick: makes nearly inch-and-a-half-tall waffles like the Cuisinart WAF-F40 Double Flip but cheaper and slimmer to store, though it makes one at a time and uses a timer rather than heat-level browning. Far thicker Belgian output than the basic Cuisinart WMR-CA or the tiny Dash Mini; far cheaper than the Breville BWM640XL Smart Waffle Pro.

Breville BWM640XL Smart Waffle Pro 4-Slice
#1 · Top Score

Breville BWM640XL Smart Waffle Pro 4-Slice

The premium do-it-all pick: makes four waffles at once with finer browning control than any other model here, but costs far more than the Cuisinart WAF-F40 Double Flip, Presto FlipSide, Cuisinart WMR-CA, or Dash Mini. Its individual waffles are smaller than the Cuisinart Double Flip's.

Cuisinart WAF-F40 Double Flip Belgian Waffle Maker
#2

Cuisinart WAF-F40 Double Flip Belgian Waffle Maker

The best-value flip machine: makes larger individual waffles than the premium Breville BWM640XL Smart Waffle Pro for a fraction of the price, and out-styles the Presto FlipSide on browning settings. Bigger and more capable than the basic Cuisinart WMR-CA or the tiny Dash Mini.

Cuisinart WMR-CA Round Classic Waffle Maker
#3

Cuisinart WMR-CA Round Classic Waffle Maker

The compact everyday classic-waffle pick: smaller, faster-heating, and cheaper than the Belgian flip makers (Cuisinart WAF-F40 Double Flip, Presto FlipSide), but it makes thin classic waffles rather than thick Belgian ones. More capable and better-built than the tiny Dash Mini; far cheaper and simpler than the Breville BWM640XL Smart Waffle Pro.

Dash Mini Waffle Maker
#5

Dash Mini Waffle Maker

By far the smallest and cheapest maker here, sized for single four-inch waffles and chaffles rather than breakfast for a family. It cannot approach the output or the browning control of the Breville BWM640XL Smart Waffle Pro, Cuisinart WAF-F40 Double Flip, Presto FlipSide or Cuisinart WMR-CA Round Classic.
