The GE GPT225SSLSS is a 24-inch convertible dishwasher with a stainless steel tub that rolls on casters and runs from a kitchen faucet, or can be fully installed. Reviewed found its cleaning and drying matched higher-end built-in machines, and Wirecutter names the GPT series its top portable pick for strong cleaning and an easy hook-up. Both note drawbacks: Reviewed measured heavy water use and a short cycle list, and Wirecutter points out it cannot run from a standard water line without extra plumbing. It suits renters and small kitchens with no dishwasher connection; anyone who can install a built-in machine, or who wants a tighter water budget, should look elsewhere.

Cleans like a built-in machine on a faucet hook-up
Reviewed ran full loads on Normal, Quick and Heavy cycles and found the GPT225SSLSS cleaned 98.5% of its test stains on Normal and almost 99% on Heavy, where the stains include baked-on cheese and burnt sugar. Its Quick cycle cleaned just over 92%, against a 96% average for built-in models. Reviewed concluded the machine erases the gap it had previously seen between portable and installed dishwashers, and only one or two items in a full load were not completely dry.
Wirecutter tested the same 24-inch model with an average powder detergent and found it scored exceptionally well on its sensor cycle, clearing jam, coffee grounds and a mix of peanut butter, applesauce and soy sauce. It left a little dried egg behind, and more on the light quick cycle, but Wirecutter says that only the best dishwashers on extended cycles with strong detergent fully remove that stain. Wirecutter also concluded that, compared with the full-size built-in dishwashers it has tested, the GPT holds its own.
Pre-attached hoses and a usable worktop
Wirecutter found set-up fast because the input and output hoses come pre-attached; the main job is choosing the right faucet adapter from those supplied. Fitting the four casters needs some lifting and may call for a second pair of hands. The control panel offers light, heavy and auto-sense washes plus wash boost or sanitize, and Wirecutter describes it as intuitive. The 1.5-inch top serves as extra counter space and is sturdy enough for a cutting board once the casters are locked. A Wirecutter writer who has used a 24-inch GPT at home since 2023 reports good results with regular filter care, though she trimmed a loose bottom gasket and replaced the silverware basket.
High water use and a basic cycle list
The main trade-off is water. Reviewed estimates the GPT225SSLSS will use more than 1,394 gallons a year, over twice the 577 gallons a typical built-in uses, putting it near the top of the range Reviewed has measured. Cycle choice is also limited to three washes with boost and sanitize options, which Reviewed calls a quibble given how well those cycles perform. The warranty is one year on parts and labour, with no longer cover on the stainless tub. Wirecutter adds that the machine cannot run from a standard water line without extra plumbing work, and that hose-style pull-out faucets will not work with a portable dishwasher.
Priced like a built-in dishwasher
Wirecutter notes that both GPT sizes typically cost around $850, as much as or more than several standard built-in dishwashers, but judges the cleaning and ease of use worth the outlay. Reviewed reaches the same verdict, saying the price is justified by its performance and that the stainless steel tub should help it last and run quietly. For buyers who can fit a permanent machine, Reviewed points towards a built-in instead; for those who cannot, this is the model both publications recommend first.
Strengths
- +Cleaned 98.5% of test stains on its Normal cycle and almost 99% on Heavy in Reviewed's lab
- +Dries well, with only one or two items short of fully dry from a full load
- +Input and output hoses come pre-attached, so hooking up to a faucet is quick
- +1.5-inch top doubles as extra worktop and will hold a cutting board
- +Has a built-in food grinder, a nice touch on a portable that drains into the sink
Watch-outs
- −Reviewed estimates water use at over 1,394 gallons a year, more than twice a typical built-in
- −Only three wash cycles and few ways to customise a wash
- −Cannot connect to a standard water line without extra plumbing work
How it compares
Unlike the built-in LG LDTH7972S and Bosch 800 Series SHX78CM5N, the GE rolls on casters and connects to a kitchen faucet, and can later be converted to a permanent installation. It is a full 24-inch-wide machine, so it holds far more than the Farberware FCD06ABBWHA Countertop Dishwasher, but it needs floor space and a compatible faucet rather than a spot on the counter.
