Good Housekeeping's Textiles Lab named the Ranier its best overall outdoor rug and The Spruce named it best washable, and both awards rest on the same two-piece design: a printed polyester cover that peels off a nonslip pad and goes through a domestic washer. Ruggable's own specification puts the Flatwoven cover at 2 mm over a 1/8-inch pad, which is why it slides under doors that defeat thicker rugs. The washing is genuinely useful and genuinely awkward — The Spruce recommends doing it once at the end of a season and scrubbing your machine afterwards. Day to day, a hose and spot cleaner do the job. It is the pick for a patio shared with dogs and children rather than the pick for the most punishing weather.

Strengths
  • The printed face layer unclips from the pad and goes into a home washing machine
  • Ruggable specifies the Flatwoven cover as a 2 mm low-pile system with a waterproof barrier behind the stain-resistant face
  • The nonslip pad is only 1/8 in thick, so the assembled rug clears low door clearances
Watch-outs
  • After The Spruce washed a season's worth of debris out of it, their machine "smelled like an aquarium" and the drum was coated in grit
  • Good Housekeeping needed two people to line the cover up on the pad without bumps and bubbles
  • The 8-by-10 pad ships as multiple pieces you assemble yourself

This is the outdoor rug that three separate hands-on tests independently put near the top, and the reason is consistency rather than flair. The Spruce ran the Courtyard for over six months on an uncovered deck and Bob Vila ran it for five weeks on bare concrete; neither saw fading, water absorption or curling. Good Housekeeping's Textiles Lab liked the flatweave's feel but flagged waves and curled edges on the smaller sample they unrolled. Care is a garden hose, a pressure washer and occasionally a leaf blower, which is about as low-maintenance as this category gets. What you give up is plushness and pattern variety: it is thin, mat-like, and the design is a stripe.

Strengths
  • Two Spruce testers ran it for more than six months through thunderstorms, pool water and leaf fall without fading
  • Bob Vila left it on bare concrete through a 90-degree heat wave and a thunderstorm and it neither faded nor absorbed water
  • Lies flat out of the roll at large sizes; The Spruce did not use a rug pad under the 8-by-10 or 9-by-12
Watch-outs
  • The Spruce watched the perimeter go dingy within a few weeks on an uncovered deck; a pressure washer is the fix, repeatedly
  • Good Housekeeping's lab sample unrolled to pronounced waves with edges that curled dramatically
  • Good Housekeeping also found minor fraying along the bound back edge straight out of the packaging

How they stack up

Ruggable Outdoor Ranier Dark Wood Rug (8' x 10' Rug + Pad System)

It is the only rug in this group whose face layer detaches and goes into a home washing machine; the Pottery Barn Kian Outdoor Performance Rug and the Quince Sloane Indoor/Outdoor Rug are hose-only by comparison. Against the Safavieh Courtyard CY6062-236 it trades some all-weather indifference for a pattern that reads like an indoor rug.

Safavieh Courtyard CY6062-236 Grey/Bone Striped Indoor/Outdoor Rug (9' x 12')

Of the six rugs here it is the only one two separate hands-on tests were willing to leave on a fully uncovered surface; the nuLOOM Wynn Braided Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug and the Quince Sloane Indoor/Outdoor Rug were both routed to covered porches instead. It gives up softness to the Pottery Barn Kian Outdoor Performance Rug and machine washability to the Ruggable Outdoor Ranier Dark Wood Rug.
