Quince Sloane Indoor/Outdoor Rug (8' x 10', Natural)

The Sloane is the rug for a three-season porch rather than an open patio, and The Spruce is explicit about why. Hand-loomed from PET recycled from water bottles, it is nearly as soft as the Pottery Barn Kian but much thinner, and their testers concluded it belongs somewhere semi-protected. Over six months on a screened porch it took wind-blown rain and tracked-in grit without the edges curling or wrinkling. The weaknesses are the flip side of the softness: it stretches and bunches when furniture is dragged over it, it absorbs water, and debris settles into the pile if you let it. Quince sells it in six neutral colourways and five sizes.

Strengths
  • The Spruce ranks it second only to the Kian for softness among every outdoor rug in their test group
  • Six months on a screened porch left the edges uncurled and unwrinkled
  • Stood up to wind-swept rain and tracked-in debris without visible damage
Watch-outs
  • Thin and stretchy enough that furniture movement bunches it; The Spruce expects you to keep readjusting
  • Soaks up a noticeable amount of water, which is why they kept it under cover
  • Debris works into the soft fibres and has to be cleaned out before it embeds

This is the outdoor rug that three separate hands-on tests independently put near the top, and the reason is consistency rather than flair. The Spruce ran the Courtyard for over six months on an uncovered deck and Bob Vila ran it for five weeks on bare concrete; neither saw fading, water absorption or curling. Good Housekeeping's Textiles Lab liked the flatweave's feel but flagged waves and curled edges on the smaller sample they unrolled. Care is a garden hose, a pressure washer and occasionally a leaf blower, which is about as low-maintenance as this category gets. What you give up is plushness and pattern variety: it is thin, mat-like, and the design is a stripe.

Strengths
  • Two Spruce testers ran it for more than six months through thunderstorms, pool water and leaf fall without fading
  • Bob Vila left it on bare concrete through a 90-degree heat wave and a thunderstorm and it neither faded nor absorbed water
  • Lies flat out of the roll at large sizes; The Spruce did not use a rug pad under the 8-by-10 or 9-by-12
Watch-outs
  • The Spruce watched the perimeter go dingy within a few weeks on an uncovered deck; a pressure washer is the fix, repeatedly
  • Good Housekeeping's lab sample unrolled to pronounced waves with edges that curled dramatically
  • Good Housekeeping also found minor fraying along the bound back edge straight out of the packaging

How they stack up

Quince Sloane Indoor/Outdoor Rug (8' x 10', Natural)

The Spruce sent it to a screened porch rather than the open deck where the Safavieh Courtyard CY6062-236 lived, and rated it softer than everything here except the Pottery Barn Kian Outdoor Performance Rug. It shares the nuLOOM Wynn Braided Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug's central weakness, which is that it soaks up water.

Safavieh Courtyard CY6062-236 Grey/Bone Striped Indoor/Outdoor Rug (9' x 12')

Of the six rugs here it is the only one two separate hands-on tests were willing to leave on a fully uncovered surface; the nuLOOM Wynn Braided Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug and the Quince Sloane Indoor/Outdoor Rug were both routed to covered porches instead. It gives up softness to the Pottery Barn Kian Outdoor Performance Rug and machine washability to the Ruggable Outdoor Ranier Dark Wood Rug.
