Ranked #5 in Best Backpacking Water Filters

Platypus GravityWorks 4L

4.0

2 sources$134.95as of Nov 6

The Platypus GravityWorks 4L is the group and base-camp filter. CleverHiker and OutdoorGearLab both score it 75 and call hands-free gravity filtration tough to beat for pairs and groups: hang the dirty bag, walk away, come back to clean water. It moves large volumes quickly and lasts longer than the personal squeeze filters. Heavy, bulky, and pricey, it is the wrong tool solo and unbeatable when you are filtering for several people.

Strengths

— Hands-free gravity filtration: hang the dirty bag and walk away while it fills the clean one
— Filters large volumes fast, ideal for groups, couples, and base camps
— Comes with both dirty and clean reservoirs plus the hose and hollow-fiber filter

Watch-outs

— Heaviest system here at 11.5 oz, overkill for solo ultralight trips
— Bulky 4-liter bags take up more pack space than a personal filter

Sawyer Squeeze Water Filtration System

4.4

3 sources$30.5as of Oct 16

The Sawyer Squeeze has been the backpacker default for years, and the experts still rank it at or near the top. CleverHiker makes it their overall Editor's Pick, OutdoorGearLab scores it 78 of 100, and GearJunkie names it the best thru-hiking filter. Its defining trait is a 100,000-gallon lifespan, so one filter can outlast years of trips. The pouches are weak; the filter itself is fast, light, and essentially permanent.

Strengths

— Effectively unlimited 378,541-liter (100,000-gallon) filter lifespan, the best long-term value here
— Fast flow rate, filtering a liter in roughly 40 seconds when clean
— Versatile: squeeze, gravity, inline, or straight from the pouch

Watch-outs

— Included pouches are flimsy and prone to splitting; many upgrade to CNOC bags
— Backflushing with the included syringe is needed to maintain flow

How they stack up

Platypus GravityWorks 4L

The only hands-free group system here, filtering far more volume at once than the personal Sawyer Squeeze, Katadyn BeFree, or Platypus QuickDraw, but it is the heaviest and priciest; its 1,500-liter filter outlasts the BeFree and QuickDraw while falling short of the Sawyer.

Sawyer Squeeze Water Filtration System

Outlasts the 1,000-liter Katadyn BeFree and Platypus QuickDraw filters many times over, and is lighter and more versatile than the group-oriented Platypus GravityWorks 4L; faster and longer-lived than the MSR TrailShot but with weaker stock pouches.
