2 sourcesall derived$6,999as of Oct 11

Wirecutter borrowed an Impulse Cooktop, had it installed in its test kitchen and called it powerful, precise and impressively intuitive, and very expensive. A battery lets it run from a regular 120-volt outlet and send 10,000 watts to one element. A New York Magazine Strategist writer who cooks on one at home says its biggest drawback is the price. Impulse lists the 30-inch model at $6,999.

Strengths
  • — Runs on a regular 120-volt outlet, per Wirecutter
  • — Target temperature can be set to the degree and is held by pan sensors, per Wirecutter
  • — The Strategist's writer could reheat fish without overcooking it and brown butter while distracted
Watch-outs
  • — Costs as much as the most expensive luxury cooktops, per Wirecutter; the Strategist calls the price its biggest drawback
  • — The prototype wok ring Wirecutter tried heated only the very center of a round wok
  • — Impulse says the battery hangs 6.5 inches below the counter, which limits the ovens that fit beneath

Miele KM 7740 FR

Wirecutter tested the 36-inch Miele KM 7740 FR in its test kitchen and names it one of its three induction cooktop picks, under the label "Higher-end design, proven reliability". It finds the features and functionality solid but not always intuitive, and says the cooktop stands out more for its sleek design. Abt lists it at $3,199.

Strengths
  • — 11-inch large element draws 3,700 W on boost, per Wirecutter
  • — Adjustable keep-warm setting that Wirecutter calls super-useful
  • — Auto-heat mode speed-heats a pan to a chosen setting, per Wirecutter
Watch-outs
  • — Wirecutter found the extra power settings beyond the nine basic levels confusing to reach
  • — Programming the timer or changing settings is somewhat tricky even after reading the manual, per Wirecutter
  • — No way to set a precise temperature or cook along with a recipe automatically, per Wirecutter

How they stack up

Impulse Cooktop (30-inch)

At $6,999 the Impulse Cooktop costs more than twice the Bosch 800 Series NIT8661UC ($3,099.00) or the Miele KM 7740 FR ($3,199). It has four elements where those two have five and the Miele KM 7745 FL has six cooking zones. Wirecutter says it lets a cook set a target temperature to the degree, which the same outlet says the Bosch and the Miele KM 7740 FR cannot do, and it uses knobs where the two Mieles use touch controls.

Miele KM 7740 FR

At $3,199 the Miele KM 7740 FR costs $100 more than the Bosch 800 Series NIT8661UC and $800 less than Miele's own flush-mounted KM 7745 FL. Wirecutter picked both the KM 7740 FR and the Bosch: the Miele's 11-inch main element is smaller than the Bosch's 13-inch one, and its warranty is two years against Bosch's one. Wirecutter says Miele 7000-series cooktops cannot set a precise temperature, which the Impulse Cooktop can do to the degree.
