Best Friends by Sheri The Original Calming Donut Cuddler

4.2

3 sourcesall derived$34.99as of Oct 11

Best Friends by Sheri makes the original viral 'donut bed,' and after years of imitators the genuine article is still the one anxious dogs actually settle into. Its raised rim and shag fur trigger a nesting instinct; Apartment Therapy's reviewer bought four after the first one worked. It isn't orthopedic, but for anxiety-prone dogs that pile pillows or curl tight, nothing else in the category competes.

Strengths

— Vegan shag faux fur exterior mimics a mother's coat — the self-warming, tactile design measurably reduces anxiety behaviors
— Six sizes from XS (18 in) through XXL (54 in) supporting dogs up to 210 lbs
— Water- and dirt-resistant bottom panel; small/medium sizes are entirely machine-washable

Watch-outs

— High-heat drying mats the shag and takes forever to fluff back up — line dry or low-tumble only

Big Barker Original Orthopedic Dog Bed

5.0

1 source$250as of Oct 10

No other large-breed dog bed has peer-reviewed clinical data behind it, and the Big Barker's 7-inch triple-layer foam holds up better over years of heavy use than anything else in this category. It's expensive, but the 10-year warranty and replacement guarantee make the math work for owners of senior or large-breed dogs with joint issues.

Strengths

— Seven-inch triple-layer therapeutic foam clinically shown to reduce joint pain in dogs over 70 lbs (University of Pennsylvania study)
— 10-Year No-Flatten warranty backed by free replacement if foam loses more than 10% of its shape
— Removable microsuede cover machine-washes without shrinking or losing its surface feel

Watch-outs

— Cover is a two-person job to wrestle back on after washing (Giant size especially)
